Who is Abraham Aronovitch?

Abraham Aronovitch is a French figurative painter, born in 1953, who lives and works in Paris. An ophthalmic surgeon by profession, he has been painting, self-taught, for some fifteen years; his studio in the Marais can be visited by appointment.

Since 2021 he has devoted himself to Behind the Obvious, a series of 31 acrylic canvases in which a blue figure faces the mirror of his bathroom. He describes his painting as “oneiro-existential figuration”.

He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris, in the official selection, in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and held a solo exhibition, Yes/No, at 24Beaubourg in 2022. His work was published in Grands Peintres & Sculpteurs magazine (2025) and discussed by the art critics Chris Cyrille and Leïla Simon and by the psychoanalyst Francesca Biagi-Chai. Since January 2026 he has been represented by Artsper.

What is he seeking to paint?

“I do not paint a figure in front of a mirror; I paint the moment when the gaze leaves the visible world to enter a mental space.”

The Series

What is the link between ophthalmic surgery and his painting?

“For Abraham Aronovitch, the move from ophthalmic surgery to figurative painting is not a break, but a transmutation of the gaze.”

“His medical background informs his approach through a constant reflection on perception and the mechanisms of the gaze, without ever lapsing into the illustrative or the didactic.”
