Abraham Aronovitch in his studio, seated beside his canvas The Cherry Blossom Alley.
In the studio, with The Cherry Blossom Alley

A bathroom mirror.

In it, a blue figure looks at itself.

The reflection does not coincide.

It opens onto another scene:

memory, desire, landscape.

The Cherry Blossom Alley, 2023. Two blue figures frame a mirror that opens onto an alley of cherry trees in blossom.
The Cherry Blossom Alley, 2023, 97 × 130 cm
Summer Day’s Dream, At Night, 2025. A blue figure seen from behind in shadow, facing a mirror that opens onto a summer picnic.
Summer Day’s Dream, At Night, 2025, 97 × 130 cm

Behind the Obvious (in French, “Derrière l’évidence”) is the artist’s major series. In it, the mirror becomes the device of the whole painting: a rectangle within the canvas, a second image within the image. Enter the four rooms

I do not paint a figure in front of a mirror, but rather the moment when the gaze leaves the visible world to enter a mental space.

The Artist

Abraham Aronovitch is a painter and visual artist based in Paris. His oneiro-existential figurative painting turns the bathroom mirror into a face-to-face encounter: there, the figure is exposed before adopting the social mask.

Flat colour and blue

Acrylic in flat fields reduces painting to its essentials. Chromatic Blue, his signature, makes each figure an archetype rather than a portrait. His reference points: Marlene Dumas, Alex Katz, Matisse. His homages: Picasso, Magritte, Nicolas de Staël. The artist’s approach
